Dakota the Joyful

Dakota the Ferret

When we realized that domesticated Ferrets sleep like 22 hours a day and are comedians for two, us workaholics committed, “All In.”  Problem is, they’re illegal in California.  So, smuggle we did…the appropriate travel for our magical rascal.

The moment she arrived, she was ready to bolt.  There was a frenzied dance we learned to recognize as an invitation to join her in exhilarated joy.  After an adorable wrap around the neck and a bite to eat, she took off with the energy of a photon.  And, whoops, she quickly disappeared.  After a frantic search, we found her inside a make-up kit, smeared with rouge and lipstick–totally intoxicated.  Over the months, her mischievousness swelled, exhibiting daily journeys to parts of the house a pinky finger couldn’t enter.

As a metaphor, Dakota was so perfect for us. We so needed a connection with something else outside of this realm of work, competition, and superficial chatter.  We needed grounding in a more authentic, shadowy, magical world. Think about the verb “ferreting” – to dig up. And that’s what she did for us.

About the art

Anyone who has ever been around a ferret knows their energy.  I hate that their lives are so short-lived. Using negative space and carefully placed color, the story emerges.  The colors selected are strong and their purpose clear, just like their lives.
