Harry and Marta

Reasons to Keep Going

Death came slowly to the love of her life. While the process of dying was horrid, the aftermath was just as bad. From the forced communications with the well-intentioned, through the endless logistics, she was expected to carry-on. The loneliness was crushing.

Also in deep mourning, were two Corgis, Harry, and Marta.  From the time the body was removed, Harry particularly lay exhausted and confused.  The two watched as the nurses packed up, and the room was cleared.  All the while, they inhaled the grief.  The waves of sadness were relentless.

In the dark, winter months ahead, they’d follow the lady from room to room to make sure nothing happened to her.  And, without asking, they gave her structure to an otherwise empty, depleted day.  While working hard on both tasks, they learned they had another source of love in each other.  They touched and stared and groomed and nurtured. And so the healing began.

They know the man is not coming back but he’s not erased. Like a wall renewed with paint, the undercoat is still there. With careful application, the two coats merge and life moves forward.
