Scientists tell us that dreams are the result of neurons firing at random memories during sleep. Our Sapien brains react by doing what we do best: we make up a story. We dream.
However, their explanation takes all the magic away, doesn’t it? And we need magic the most when we try and deal with the loss of a beloved pet. Rainbow Bridge? Bring it on. And, while we are at it, let’s knit together our own explanation of dreams. One where we can share dream space with others long gone. In it, we’ll create a special time when our tribe is still together. The soundtrack for this dream will be an old folk song from the 60s shamelessly rewritten for this perfect reunion called “Summer Song.”
Trees swayin’ in the summer breeze
Showin’ off their silver leaves
As we walked by
Sunlight pouring through our windowpanes
Sleeping on the warm wood grain
As days roll by
They say that all good things must end someday
Autumn leaves must fall
But don’t you know that it hurt me so
To say goodbye to you
Wish I didn’t have to go
But when the rain
Beats against those windowpanes
Let’s think of summer days again
We’ll dream of us
