Long walks, a warm bed, cool water on a hot day. On top of all of that goodness I get praise, love and the best homemade treats, ever.
My two-legged works from home most days so I get lots of time with her. This includes my favorite game, which is when Mom throws the ball, I go and get it and then never, ever give it back. Such joy is unimaginable.
Life didn’t start so easy for me. There was that time I lived on the street and kept getting into fights with bigger dogs. After I lost my pups, I just wandered around till a human picked me up. I went to a holding area where I waited for someone to find me. As you are well aware, this is not a good place for a Pit…
Right before my permanent departure from this planet, the folks at Pit Crew found me a temporary foster home. It proved, well, only temporary. But they kept trying. they said I needed foster care from an expert. I thought I was going to go back to that place because, really, what “expert” wants a Pit? Well, turns out, there was this two-legged very experienced foster Mom who saw my picture and came looking for me. That’s when everything changed.
In the days that followed, she was patient, and I tried my best. Although this was only supposed to be for a couple of weeks, a funny thing happened along the way, we fell in love. Yup, even though the rest of the world gave up on me, she couldn’t.
It was a crooked road getting to her, but, in the end, it was all worth it. (With thanks to Bobby Boyd, Jeff Hanna and Marcus Hummon for writing Rascal Flatts’ song that helped me find the right words to say how grateful I am.)
“This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.”

About the piece: A crooked road was collaged into a dream-like background is enhanced with acrylics and pastel crayons. An image transfer of Nettie dominates the lower third. More crayons highlight and stretch her soft ears as if floating over the road in her land of dream-come-true.
